ABOUT US

The Club Español e Iberoamericano del Arbitraje (the “CEIA” or the“Club”) is a Spanish nonprofit association which promotes  arbitration as an alternative dispute resolution method and promotes the Spanish and Portuguese language in arbitral proceedures. It was established in 2005 by a group of professional specialists in international arbitration.

The Club, chaired by Alfonso Iglesia, brings together over 1300 associates from 45 countries, all of whichare experts in arbitration andhave contributed to the consolidation of a single Spanish and Portuguese arbitration community. All the people specialized in this matter who share the goals of the Club, independently from their nationality and place of residence are invited to join the CEIA.

The main objectives of the Club Español e Iberoamericano del Arbitraje are the following:

  1. Promote the use of arbitration among Spanish and Portuguese speaking entrepreneurs or with interests in Ibero-America.
  2. Become a forum where professionals can feel comfortable debating and sharing ideas and knowledge.
  3. Collaborate with the judges and the judicial systems in the study, development and application of arbitration.
  4. Prepare reports, working documents, recommendations for good practices in arbitration and mediation, as well as guidelines of conduct.
  5. Organize periodical events on arbitration and mediation and an annual congress that serves as a meeting point for worldwide specialists on the subject.
  6. Maintain a website that gathers all the relevant information in the field of arbitration and mediation.
  7. Publish a list of members on the Club’s website.

CEIA promotes its objectives through its 31 International Chapters in Europe, America and Asia: in  Argentina and Uruguay, Austria and Germany, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador , France, Guatemala, Holland, Honduras, Italy, Luxemburg, Mexico, Nordic-Baltic, Panama, Peru, Poland and Ukraine, Portugal, Puerto Rico, United Kingdom, United States (Florida and New York-Washington DC), Romania, Switzerland and Venezuela. Furthermore, new Chapters are formalizing their constitution on different continents.

The work of the Club Español e Iberoamericano del Arbitraje is carried out through different Commissions and Working Groups, such as the Commission of Best Practices in Arbitration, Independence of Arbitrators, Procedural Matters, Arbitration and Public Law, Financial Arbitration or the Mediation Commission. These commissions draw up reports, codes and recommendations on various matters, aimed at users of arbitration, lawyers, arbitrators, national and international arbitration and mediation institutions, judges, representatives of academia, legislators and public administrations. Among the documents that have been published are the Recommendations regarding the independence and impartiality of arbitrators, the CEIA Code of Best Practices in Arbitration, the Code of Best Practices in Mediation and the Report on Corporate Arbitration in Spain.

In addition, since its foundation, the CEIA has been intensely active through seminars, webinars, annual conferences, and publications such as the Spain Arbitration Review.

The CEIA-40 is the group of young practitioners in arbitration which organizes periodical activities on arbitration, the Annual Meeting, and participates in the Co-Chairs’ Circle, thus representing the voice in Spanish and Portuguese of the international community of young arbitration professionals.

In conclusion, the CEIA serves as a platform to show the high level of arbitration practice in Spanish and Portuguese or with an Ibero-American component. The Club’s desire is to continue working with all those who are interested in increasing the confidence in international arbitration.
